The Provincial Police Office (PPO) of Oriental Mindoro announced Saturday (May 6) that at least 35 barangays have been declared as drug free and 86 as drug cleared as a result of relentless and reinvigorated campaign of the police against illegal drugs in the province.
Senior Superintendent Christopher C. Birung, provincial director of Oriental Mindoro PNP, said that three more barangays in Bulalacao, namely Barangay Balatasan, San Francisco and San Isidro joined the roster of drug-cleared barangays which he cited as a significant achievement considering the remote location of the town in southern Mindoro.
Birung said he is confident that more barangays will pass the criteria enumerated under the regulation of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) which has provided the guidelines for declaring drug-free and drug-cleared barangays.
Birung said that in the town of Baco, five barangays–Alag, Mangangan Uno, Pambisan, Tagumpay and Sta. Rosa–were also declared as drug-cleared.
Under DDB regulations, an area can be considered drug-free in the absence of the following: drug supply or transit/transshipment activities, drug laboratories and warehouses, drug dens, marijuana cultivation sites, users and pushers, drug protectors, coddlers and financiers.
A drug-cleared barangay must also have barangay officers who are active in various anti-illegal drug activities such as drug awareness and preventive campaign.
Birung said the chief of the local police unit has a major role in declaring the drug-cleared status of the affected barangay since he is the one who issues a certification that confirms the assessment of the barangay and the local drug abuse council.
After a barangay is declared as drug-cleared, support activities, such as sports, religious and social activities, to be funded from the general fund of the barangay, shall be implemented, Birung said.
