Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro — Two Philippine Marines personnel were shot and killed by two still unidentified gunmen yesterday morning in Barangay Magara in the municipality of Roxas in Palawan.
Chief Superintendent Wilben M. Mayor, regional director of Police Regional Office-Mimaropa (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) identified the two slain soldiers as Pfc. Joene G. Galiste and Pvt. James M. Porol of Marine Battalion Landing Team 12 based in Palawan.
Mayor said the two soldiers were buying food items at around 7:30 a.m. at a local market when they were shot at close range by the gunmen, who were both in short pants, gray jacket and white shirt.
Magara barangay chairman Bernie Valdez immediately informed the Roxas Municipal Police Station which dispatched four officers to the scene.
The suspects immediately fled after the attack.
Meanwhile, in Bataraza, Palawan, Pfc. Garry M. Estapia and an unidentified soldier were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off and damaged their M35 troop carrier Tuesday afternoon in Sitio Tagbituka, Barangay Tarusan.
Initial investigation showed that the said personnel of MBLT 24 were en route to Rio Tuba when the incident took place.
The soldiers fired at the unidentified perpetrators who promptly retreated.
The wounded soldiers were transported by a Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Ambulance to a nearby hospital.
